LEGO Marvelâs Avengers was finally released this week, with a roster of over 200 playable characters. Noticeably absent, however, were the Guardians of the Galaxy, despite previously appearing in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. What does it mean? Well it’s hard to say exactly, but the ending of LEGO Marvelâs Avengers appears to hint that the Guardians may get their own LEGO game in the future.

During the end game sequence, a very familiar Marvel villain shows up with one of the most memorable objects from the Guardians of the Galaxy film:
That’s Thanos holding what looks a heck of a lot like Star-Lord’s cassette player. Now, this could simply be yet another Marvel Easter Egg, with no larger significance towards the next LEGO Marvel title. But developer TT Games has a history of using Easter Eggs to hint at what’s to come: LEGO Batman 3 teased LEGO Jurassic World, for example, so it’s certainly plausible that TT Games is foreshadowing an upcoming game in this image.
Looking ahead to Marvelâs film slate, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the studio’s first major release of 2017, making it a natural choice for the expanding LEGO Marvel gaming franchise. The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie was an unexpected blockbuster when it hit theaters in 2014, and Marvel has been steadily building on that with multiple ongoing Guardians of the Galaxy comics, an animated series, action figures, and other merchandise. A stand alone Guardians of the Galaxy video game is probably inevitable, and a LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy game could potentially feature several of Marvelâs cosmic characters who have yet to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Adam Warlock, anyone?
