With X-Men: Days of Future Past gearing up for a fast-approaching theatrical release, series producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are making the rounds to talk about not just that film, but the future of the entire X-Men franchise. During an interview with EW, the topic of spin-off films came up. When last we heard, the only spin-off with a confirmed green-light was another Wolverine film, but now it seems there’s more in the works over at Fox.
âThere was a regime [at the studio] that didnât see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and weâre going to do right by it,â said producer Lauren Shuler Donners. âIâd like to do Gambit. Iâd like to do Deadpool. Weâll see. Thereâs a lot of really great characters.â But the most shocking tidbit came when Simon Kinberg brought up Mystique. âI love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, thereâs so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.â
Considering The Hunger Games series is set to conclude at the end of next year, a Mystique film is most certainly in the realm of possibility, as every studio under the sun is going to want to lock Lawrence down in a new franchise for the next 3-5 years. Since she already has a foothold in the X-Men franchise, using her to lead a spin-off film is just the right move on many business and creative levels. A Mystique solo-film could even dive into the birth of Nighcrawler between Mystique and Azazel, which yes, would mean Nightcrawler could finally make his way back into the X-Men films, even if it is just in infant form. Or how about a film follows Nightcrawler in adulthood learning about his origins? You know you want it.
There’s nothing but potential in a Mystique solo-film, so it’s a total go in our book.
Give me my Deadpool film already! Oh yeah… Please do it right.
I, for one, welcome our new Jennifer Lawrence overlord.
Jennifer Lawrence’s plan to take over the world.
