Insomniac Reveals the First SUNSET OVERDRIVE Gameplay

You had me at TN-Teddy Gun, Sunset Overdrive.

Insomniac has been quiet about its shooter Sunset Overdrive for a minute or so, but now we finally get to see what can only be described as a parkour-heavy, stylized, open world version of Ratchet and Clank, except, you know, more absurd.

The trailer drops some of the story details for the Xbox One exclusive’s campaign, which drops you in the middle of Sunset City, which is suffering with a case of the apocalypse, thanks to gum-colored crazies infected by a toxic energy drink. Presumably, the story will entail trying to survive/find a cure/escape Sunset City, while meeting the various factions that live there including theme gangs (I love theme gangs) while doing crazy parkour nonsense in order to avoid masses of the infected.

The best part is that Insomniac seems to be leaning into the absurdity of Ratchet and Clank-style gameplay, offering up a variety of oddball guns for you to mess around with. Most of them seem very… explosive, lots of particles and effects (and particle effects) on the screen at any given time.

Then there’s the Amp system: essentially, combat perks that activate as you rack up kills. From the sound of it, these are equippable and mixed with all of the wall running and grinding on wires, give Sunset Overdrive a little bit of an Infamous feel. Come to think of it, the whole formula seems to be Dead Rising + Ratchet and Clank Guns, but also you’re Cole from Infamous.

Sunset Overdrive will be available sometime this fall. What do you think of the footage? Let us know in the comments below.
