Frank Marshall Says Indiana Jones 5 Isn’t Written But Will Have a ‘Great Story’

During an interview Thursday for The Other Side of the Wind, producer Frank Marshall said that no story is in place for Indiana Jones 5 yet, but he will approach the sequel in the same way that he has for other franchises he’s shepherded to the screen. “The way I approach all movies is that we have to tell a good story,” Marshall told Nerdist via telephone. “And that applies to everything; I don’t look at films’ past performance, or what they did. I think we just look forward, and we’re going to come up with a great story.”

Marshall, who started his collaboration with director Steven Spielberg on Raiders of the Lost Ark, said he hasn’t spent much time considering the critical reaction to the last installment, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, or worrying about a film that that fans will think is “better.” “We’re storytellers and that should be the bar that we set for ourselves,” he said. “That’s something that I apply to Jurassic and I apply to Bourne and I apply to Indiana Jones. Those are all franchises, and we’ve just got to tell a good story.

Marshall’s latest project is the restoration and completion of The Other Side of the Wind, a film writer-director Orson Welles shot over several years starting in in 1970 but was not finished until 2018. Marshall began his Hollywood career with the film, and helped recruit the team used to collect and assemble hundreds of hours of footage into a finished film, now scheduled for release by Netflix on November 2.

Shifting between blockbusters like Indiana Jones 5 and a labor of love like The Other Side of the Wind, the producer-director talked about how he regards the success (or failure) of his films, and how he applies their lessons to future projects. “I think when you look back at all of your films, particularly the ones I direct, I know there are moments when decisions are made, and they’re made on the fly or in the moment,” Marshall admitted. “We all know hindsight is 20/20, but in the moment you make a decision, and you’re always moving the process forward, and sometimes there’s a stronger voice in the room than others.”

“I think that you do need to have that captain of the ship that’s up there, but it is a collaboration,” he continued. “And I think that the more people that you can have in the mix that you respect their opinions, quite often that leads to the best decision. So you hope for the best, and that’s all you can do.”
