Earlier this evening, Roland Emmerich and the cast of the Independence Day sequel gathered for a Q&A from the set of the film. Not only did they reveal the title of the film, Independence Day: Resurgence (not “Independence Day 2: Fifth of July” or “Independence Day 2: Electric Boogaloo”, as we may have hoped), the folks behind the 20-years-later sequel shared details on the plot, production, and process of making a follow-up to such a beloved sci-fi classic.

Luckily, our trusty senior editor Dan Casey was on hand in New Mexico, fending off giant bugs to bring us the latest from the Independence Day set. Aaaand the official plot synopsis: We always knew they were coming back.  After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale.  Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet.  But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force.  Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
