INCEPTION’s Mystery Ending Has Finally Been Solved

One of director Christopher Nolan‘s most ambitious movies of the last decade was Inception, a trippy heist film that involved breaking into the dreams of other people and descending into multiple layers of reality. Nolan even ended Inception with an ambiguous shot that left viewers wondering if it was a dream or reality. On today’s Nerdist News, we’re clearing up that mystery thanks to one of Inception‘s co-stars, Michael Caine.

Join host and dreamscape architect, Jessica Chobot, as she reflects on Caine’s recent comments. It turns out that Caine was just as confused by Inception‘s script as the rest of us, and he didn’t mind telling Nolan that he couldn’t tell when his character was in a dream or in the “real” world. In response, Nolan told Caine that his character only existed in the reality. Therefore Caine’s scenes, including the final moments, were not a dream.

It seems pretty straightforward, doesn’t it? And yet that’s not the answer that Nolan has provided for years. Nolan seems to enjoy making fans wonder about the ending and he’s declined to publicly define it. That said, another fan theory holds that whenever Leonardo DiCaprio’s Cobb is wearing his wedding ring, it means he’s in a dream. Note that Cobb is not wearing his ring in the last scene, and the young performers playing his children are older than the kids in his earlier dreams.
