Captain Picard may be returning to the screen very soon, but before that happens, he’s going to be teaming up with the other legendary Captains in Starfleet history in IDW’s new mini-series Star Trek: The Q Conflict. For the first time ever, the beloved crews of four of the six live-action Star Trek television seriesâ The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager â will be pitted against one another, in a new IDW series which has been 53 years in the making.
Debuting in January, this epic six-part event features the writing team of Scott and David Tipton (Star Trek: The Next Generation â Mirror Broken) with art by David Messina (Cloak and Dagger). This is the decades-spanning crossover between the most beloved series in the Star Trek canon that fans have waited years to see.
According to the official description, when a dispute between godlike beings threatens the galaxy — presumably the members of the Q Continuum — it will take all of Starfleetâs best captains to stop them. James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, Kathryn Janeway, and Benjamin Sisko must go head-to-head in a competition rigged by the arrogant Q and his nigh-omnipotent cohorts. Looks like Enterprise’s Captain Archer couldn’t make it to this get-together, but hey, maybe his invitation got lost in a garbled subspace transmission.
In a statement, writer Scott Tipton said “This is it â the biggest Star Trek series ever, spanning starships, centuries, and galaxies! All of Starfleetâs most legendary officers join together for the first time against some of the greatest threats theyâve ever faced. But it wouldnât be Star Trek if it wasnât also about character, and with so many Starfleet legends crossing paths for the first time ever, The Q Conflict will give readers the opportunity to see all their favorite characters in a brand-new light.â Artist David Messina adds “Being at work on Star Trek: The Q Conflict is like coming home after a five-year mission away. To draw characters like Spock and Picard at a time thatâs so exciting for the Star Trek franchise? Itâs awesome.â
Star Trek: The Q Conflict #1 will hit comic shops with multiple covers: connecting regular covers by David Messina, and a series of retailer variants by George Caltsoudas and J.K. Woodward. The first issue hits in January of 2019.
