Techland used an emotional, thrilling, and seemingly backwards roller coaster ride to gain everyone’s attention back when the first Dead Island game launched. The original teaser trailer for the title gained it much recognition, and has been regarded by many as one of the best video game trailers ever conceived. In fact, it was so good that Dead Island had possibly the toughest time any game has ever had living up to the hype of its teaser trailer.
Now, the folks at Machinima are doing some “living up” of their own, reimagining the entire teaser trailer, shot-by-shot, in live action. This couldn’t have been an easy task, so let’s have a look at Machinima’s take and then have a glance back at Techland’s original trailer for reference.
Machinima’s take on the Dead Island trailer:
Pretty much what everyone else said. The entire thing just makes something stir in you, but the bit that always gets me in is seeing him put her back on to the ground and lets her go.

Not to be that guy, but Techland had nothing to do with the trailer. The publisher, Deep Silver, hired a VFX Studio named Axis to create the trailer. Techland developed the game, and due to the incredible response from it, went so far as to model the parent’s hotel room and their corpses, which you find in the very beginning of the game. Incidentally, Deep Silver were also forced to change the score of the game to match the somber overtones of the trailer; originally it had a more ‘techno’ score. The vibe of the trailer completely overshadowed the game’s intended vibe, causing massive restructure on the game. Pretty damn cool that a three minute video could cause all this.
The live action version is pretty damn cool. Like the poster above, I got a little weepy taking this stroll down memory lane. Thanks for sharing!
