Long before Marvel made shared movie universes popular, Quentin Tarantino was tying together his films with subtle touches and even references to his characters from previous movies. This wasn’t an exercise in continuity or even part of a larger narrative. It was just simply Tarantino being Tarantino. He even confirmed the long-standing rumors about his cinematic universe earlier this year. Now, a new video has taken the deep dive into the Tarantino-verse, with an entertaining look at some connections that you may have missed the first time.

The Tarantino Cinematic Universe video was created and posted by Luis Azevedo in his Beyond the Frame YouTube channel. Azevedo noted in the video’s description that most of the connections he illustrated were previously found by others. However, his edit made some of the more obscure Tarantino references pop out. For example, almost every Tarantino fan should know that Vic Vega (Michael Madsen) from Reservior Dogs is the brother of Vincent Vega (John Travolta) from Pulp Fiction. This video made us realize that the Vega brothers also have a similar dance style, although we’re willing to bet that Vincent has the better dance moves. But unless you saw True Romance, you may not have noticed that Harvey Keitel’s Mr. White from Reservoir Dogs actually mentioned Patricia Arquette‘s Alabama by name.

One thing to remember is that there are two levels of reality in the Tarantinoverse. There’s the “realer than real world universe,” which includes Reservoir Dogs, True Romance, Pulp Fiction, Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, and The Hateful Eight. And then there’s the fictional movie universe of that world that features both volumes of Kill Bill, Natural Born Killers, and From Dusk Till Dawn. We would have guessed that Inglourious Basterds was also in the movieverse, but apparently Eli Roth‘s Donny Donowitz was the grandfather of Roth’s character, Dov in Death Proof. And Tim Roth‘s English Pete from The Hateful 8 is also the great-great-great grandfather of Roth’s Archie Hicox from Inglourious Basterds. Therefore, Inglourious Basterds has to stay in the real world, so to speak.
