Deadpool is known for breaking the fourth wall and popping out of scenes, but what about all the action behind the scenes? How did they decide on the movie’s music, for example?
Film composer Tom Holkenborg posted a video on his YouTube channel junkiexlofficial giving us a behind-the-scenes look at what went into making the music of the film. His premise for the song choices which include an incredible and bloody opening montage set to Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” is that the film needed songs that were fun but not funny. A lot of the sound cues and music from the ’80s, he said, seemed serious back then, but are just funny now. To create some of the signature sounds that we hear throughout the film, he actually used one of the oldest synthesizers ever built: a clone of the Arp 2600 from the ’70s. He even used a Roland JD 800 digital keyboard for some of the romantic scenes to set the mood.
Holkenborg explained that, while the character of Deadpool has “very ’80s” theme music, the X-Men characters got a different treatment. Their themes are very much in honor of the X-Men movies with horns and strings, giving them a very noble sound. Another sound you might recognize is a pre-set from the Synclavier synthesizer which will remind you of some Michael Jackson music. Quincy Jones apparently had one of these babies.
