Was that W. Kamau Bell laughing and asking a question toward the end?

  2. Usman says:

Loved the episode and your initiative… The expert on this one knew almost nothing but Buzzfeed facts.

  3. Tracy says:

Great episode.  Also, love the text donation campaign idea!  Will be interested to know how well it does!

  4. Name says:

Great podcast. Only minor complaint is the ignorant gay guy who felt the need to inject the word “like” every sentence.

  5. Kevin says:

Really enjoyed this! Two gay thumbs up.

I really enjoyed the thoughts on cultural appropriation in this episode. Not to get off topic, but I’ve recently wondered why Mexican Americans don’t get more pissed off at young white artist types for being really into Day of the Dead kitsch these days. The purpose of the holiday is really beautiful and fills a need that most people don’t do very well with: dealing with grief and death. But my stupid white friends are all “Sugar skulls are so pretty!” “I like makeup!” “Here’s a concept that’s both part of some culture other than my own AND about death; double cool-thing score!” I always figured people who were genuinely into the holiday would be a little more annoyed at this sort of thing than they seem to be.

Then Moshe brought up cultural appropriation only being considered bad when the concept being re-appropriated originates from a “diminishing” culture. If the soul of a people is being diluted into nothingness, stealing from it only makes it happen faster, and that’s not ok. However, if the dope is strong, cutting it a little bit doesn’t hurt the whole. “Whatever, do your stupid shit, I’m too busy enjoying my world to give a fuck.”

    I learned something today. #thanks

Yo Moshe, i hope this gets to you. Your tantalisingly infrequent podcast is one of the most interesting, informative and entertaining podcasts i listen (i listen to quite a few). Great stuff, keep it up.
