What did we have on the Nerdist Podcast Network this week? Plenty:
We got a hostful Nerdist Podcast, always a welcome thing. The guys got comfortable in their new studio, Jonah talked about Hidden America and how the hilariously too-real Guy Fieri-like character in the Boston episode came about, Matt talked about his stolen bike and the cops who turned out to be quite familiar with the show, and Chris previewed his Id10t tour. Much fun was had.
Billy Kimball, from the writing staff of Veep, guested on Puck Soup because he’s funny, and because Greg and Lozo thought he might know hockey because of the NHL references on one episode. Turns out he does not know hockey, but he does know comedy, and we got great insight into how one of TV’s best comedies comes together. Also, the guys dissected accents, including the differences between Baltimore and Philadelphia (I can speak to that, having a touch of the latter), imitated such celebrities as a typical WIP caller (again, Philly accent) and Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo, reviewed an old school prime rib mecca in San Francisco, and, oh, yeah, talked about the Penguins’ Stanley Cup victory, Crosby over Kessel for the Conn Smythe Trophy, Hall of Fame credentials (Bernie Federko, be gone with you!), and much more.
On The Jonah Keri Podcast, Jonah went to Yankee Stadium to catch up with fellow Sports Illustrated scribe and MLB Network commentator Tom Verducci, who had some great stories about Vin Scully (ANY story by or about Vin Scully is a great story), Joey Bats, getting to suit up with the Blue Jays, and the meaning of sportswriting. And on Friday’s edition, Jonah’s old Grantland compadre Steven Hyden, author of “Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me: What Pop Music Rivalries Reveal About the Meaning of Life,” hit all the big rivalries: Biggie v. Tupac, Drake v. Meek Mill (okay, that was pretty weak all around), LBJ v. Steph (recorded before last night’s little Curry meltdown – keep that mouthpiece in your mouth, sir). And they talked about the farewell tour of Canada’s own The Tragically Hip as Gord Downie says goodbye, what cool is, and, of course, Grantland.
