After several titillating teasers, Showtimeâs Penny Dreadful has finally released something with a little meat to it, almost a full minute! This preview, entitled âA Place in the Shadows,â explores just that, the things that lurk in the darkness and go bump in the night. Narrated by Eva Green, the clip shows brief bursts of some seriously creepy imagery: contorting limps and men with hook hands, wolves (werewolves?) and vampires, and a murky spotlight on a pair of bloody chains. Oh. Yes.
For those still in the dark, Penny Dreadful is an upcoming Showtime series produced by Sam Mendes and John Logan, the team who have had their hand in films like Gladiator, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, American Beauty, and Skyfall. The show is described as a âpsychosexual horrorâ show that brings famous literary horror characters (Victor Frankenstein and his monster, Dorian Gray, and Count Dracula, to name a few) all in Victorian London. Starring Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Billie Piper, and Josh Hartnett, Penny Dreadful is shaping up to be one of the most provocative new genre shows coming out this year.
Showtime, you sly temptress. You had me at turn-of-the-century Eva Green and literary monsters. Just look at those costumes!
Here’s hoping we get a few more sneak peeks at the macabre world of Penny Dreadful before its debut on Sunday, May 11th.
