Considering we find ourselves in December, usually slow when it comes to Hollywood news and announcements that aren’t related to awards season, this week has been a pretty big one for upcoming genre titles in both film and television. From an update on The Crow reboot to casting on television left and right, let’s look at this week in “Horror Happenings!”

The Crow Remake Gets New Director

Frankly, I’m telling you all about this out of genre due diligence. I couldn’t care less about The Crow reboot, especially since the team in charge allegedly passed on hiring Tom Hiddleston for the lead role despite reports that the Marvel actor expressed great interest. Instead they went with Dracula Untold‘s Luke Evans which just doesn’t do it for me. Who knows, maybe he’ll be great.

In any case, The Crow has had a shake up when it comes to directors with Corin Hardy taking over for F. Javier Gutiérrez who will now be directing the third movie in The Ring franchise. “The Ring franchise.” Bet you forgot about that one! Oh, Hollywood…

The Crow is expected to begin production in 2015.

Preacher From Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg Ordered to Pilot by AMC

It was announced earlier this year that the graphic novel Preacher was being developed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg as well as Breaking Bad alum Sam Catlin. Now AMC has officially ordered the project to pilot. According to THR, Catlin is writing the pilot and Rogen and Goldberg will be directing. Wow! THR also reports that Catlin will be showrunning and Rogen and Goldberg will be executive producers if the pilot goes to series.

Said network president Charlie Callier of the books’ explicit content, “If you read Preacher, it has some obviously graphic violence and language and other things that we will not bring to the commercial television series. But I love that the fans will know that we’ll treat it with respect and that will elevate it and not dumb it down. And that matters. It’s an amazing piece of writing and character. Where do you see a character like that on television?”

Lifetime Casts Lead for The Omen Spin Off Series Damien from The Walking Dead‘s Glen Mazzara

Also announced earlier this year was that Lifetime had ordered a series from The Walking Dead‘s Glen Mazzara based on the character of Damien Thorn, the child Antichrist from The Omen, when he’s all grown up. The story revolves around Damien as an adult as he realizes who he really is. Deadline reports that Bradley James from TV’s Merlin will play Thorn and Shekhar Kapur, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominated director for Elizabeth, will direct the pilot. Deadline is also reporting that the series is expected to premiere in 2015.

Even though fans may tire of the endless “film-to-television” reimaginings we’ve been seeing as of late, this is one case where I do think this is a pretty good idea. There is a lot to be mined from a character like Damien Thorn, who ended up in politics if you remember the second and third films, and I like the idea that he’s struggling with his role as the Antichrist as opposed to being just a pure evil dude. Although Sam Neil is a badass, so there’s that.
