HORROR HAPPENINGS: New Line to Remake HOUSEBOUND, ASH VS. EVIL DEAD Casting News and More!

Happy Post-Friday the 13th, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day and Saturday, horror lovers! Since there was so much genre news that broke last week we’re going to be bringing you two editions of “Horror Happenings” this week starting right now! Check back on Monday for our second installment. Now, without further adieu, let’s get to it!

New Zealand Horror Favorite Housebound Getting Remake for New Line Cinema

Last week THR reported that Housebound, the low-budget horror comedy out of New Zealand that arrived stateside last year, will be developed for an American remake by New Line Cinema. The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson had championed the film throughout the release and original writer/director Gerard Johnstone will serve as a producer on the film.

We spoke with Johnstone last year about the cult favorite and he cited Jackson’s The Frighteners as well as Clue, Scooby Doo and The People Under the Stairs as his personal influences on the film. For those who may have missed Housebound upon its small release in the fall of 2014, it’s the story of a spoiled young woman who commits a crime, is caught and then finds herself confined to house arrest with her goofy mother and some other interesting characters… For fans of early Jackson or Sam Raimi, Housebound might be the film for you.

There is no word yet on who will be writing or directing the American remake but I nominate Emmy award winner Margo Martindale to play the mother. Do you agree?

Bruce Campbell’s Co-Stars Announced for Ash Vs. Evil Dead

It’s hard to believe how fast the Starz original series Ash Vs. Evil Dead is coming to fruition so quickly after being announced but this week fans learned that actors Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo would be teaming up with that glorious chin we know and love, the one and only Bruce Campbell, as his sidekicks on the 10-episode series based on the characters first introduced in the 1981 horror classic.

According to Deadline, Santiago “will play Pablo Simon Bolivar, an idealistic immigrant who becomes Ash’s loyal sidekick” and DeLorenzo will take on the role of Kelly Maxwell, described by Deadline as “a moody wild child trying to outrun her past. Reluctantly dragged into the fight against Evil with Ash and Pablo, Kelly finds a different kind of family with her fellow Deadite slayers.”

Ash Vs. Evil Dead is scheduled to premiere later this year on Starz with Sam Raimi directing the pilot and Raimi, Rob Tapert and Campbell producing.
