Capcom debuted the first Street Fighter in arcades back in 1987. But for many fans, the franchise really began in 1991 with the release of Street Fighter II. Even 24 years later, Street Fighter II is so ingrained in gaming culture that itâs newsworthy when Jamie Lee Curtis cosplays as one of the characters from the game.
From Street Fighter II, Capcom launched a billion dollar franchise that included animated series, comic books, two live-action feature films, anime movies, anime series, Manga, toys…and endless iterations of the same game, over and over again.
Therein lies the problem. Capcom made an artform out of releasing slightly newer versions of each Street Fighter game to more easily part fans from their money. While the official Mortal Kombat series is up to its tenth game (Mortal Kombat X), Capcom is only now getting around to Street Fighter V! Technically, there have been over 20 games in the Street Fighter franchise, and thatâs not even counting the various crossover games like Marvel vs. Capcom!
This weekâs Honest Game Trailer (from Smosh Games) tackles Capcomâs addiction to Street Fighter variants and a lot of the franchiseâs other issues. We donât necessarily agree with the videoâs assertion that everyoneâs favorite Street Fighter is watching the sprites beat up people on YouTube. But it is funny!
Nothing Street Fighter related is safe here! Although the 2009Â Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li movie appears to have escaped the notice of the Honest Game Trailers team. But we remember it!
