Is liking your friend’s post on Facebook getting boring to you nowadays? Don’t even sweat it, because whatever Mark Zuckerberg sees when he straps on the Oculus Rift, it’s proven to be persuasive enough to warrant Facebook dropping $2 billion dollars to purchase the Irvine, California-based headset makers. Zuckerberg seems to have quite the ambitious plan for the Oculus Rift, and took to Facebook to convey his ideas on the future.
“Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. For the past few years, this has mostly meant building mobile apps that help you share with the people you care about. We have a lot more to do on mobile, but at this point we feel we’re in a position where we can start focusing on what platforms will come next to enable even more useful, entertaining and personal experiences,” wrote Zuckerberg.
And just when we thought the VR war couldn’t get anymore eventful, in comes Facebook with the megaton of megatons. Pre-orders for the Oculus Rift 2.0 dev kit went live last week during GDC for $350, and are available for purchase at this very moment. A lot of people poo poo these sort of things. I will admit, I have not looked into the details of the deal, but I would assume that the SAME development team (including the iddqd john carmack) are still developing it. Except now they have 2 billion dollars instead of what they had. Facebook has hit critical mass, therefore people hate it, but use it all the time. The only thing I hate about facebook, are the people I follow. and that’s my problem.

I have a Facebook account, never backed or pre-ordered the Oculus Rift, yet even I’m depressed about this acquisition. If you take the time to read developer reactions to this, you realize that this was something great that was just burnt to the ground.
Just think of all the great advertising potential when facebook is able to feed images directly into our brain.
All of these people are bashing on this acquisition. I wonder, how many of them DON’T have a Facebook account?
Ugh, I was excited about the Oculus Rift and just cannot see Facebook doing anything even mildly interesting with it. Good idea into the trash pile.
