Youâre gearing up for all your turkey day prep, Christmas decorations have permeated each and every department store, and Halloween is but a distant memory. Thatâs right, itâs time for the holidays. First up is Thanksgiving, where weâll stuff ourselves silly and then immediately get in in line with all the other schmoes for Black Friday. America!
⦠Just kidding – we can do all that from the comfort of our own homes.
After Thanksgiving it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump to all those other holidays that encourage you to buy stuff for your friends, family, coworkers, and frenemies that something special. In order to help you keep an eye out for the big Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, weâve got a handy collection of gift guides prepped and ready for your consideration. In fact, weâll be giving away select items from each list (that’s Film, Science, Games, Music, TV, and Comics) in one behemoth giveaway, so make sure you enter our holiday contest for your chance to win.
Mondo Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles “Lil Mikey” Figure: At a certain point, you can only buy so many prints before you run out of wall space. (Trust us, we’ve tried.) Luckily, Mondo has taken the artistic style of frequent collaborator Mike Mitchell and transformed it into an adorable teenage mutant ninja turtle! Michelangelo, to be exact. Just look at that Lil Mikey! It’s perfect for Mondo groupies, vinyl collectors, TMNT fans, or people who appreciate adorable things or those cute/creepy turtle ice creams.
Pee-Wee’s Playhouse: The Complete Series: What’s the secret word? (Ahhhh!) Though your loved ones may have caught Pee-Wee himself, Paul Reubens, talking about a Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure sequel on the Nerdist Podcast, they’ll be pleased as punch to get the whole gang back together again in Shout Factory’s incredible box set. Special features include ten featurettes, never-before-seen interviews with the cast and crew, a look at the puppets, score, soundtrack, and production design of the beloved show. Let the cartoon begin!
Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones Seasons 3 and 4: All men must die… and wait four more months ’til the next season of Game of Thrones. For the Westerosi aficionado who’s combed through all of George R.R. Martin’s books, marathoned the last four seasons, and owns every Funko Pop! figurine and pint glass available, this book explores the world of the television series throughout seasons 3 and 4. You may have to relive the Red Wedding and that epic takedown of Prince Oberyn, but hey, at least we’ve still got the Purple Wedding and Brienne’s badassery, right? Right??
ChromeCast: This is a great gift for that special someone — or perhaps your not-so-technically-inclined parent(s), who spent all of last Christmas asking you how they could watch the final season of Breaking Bad before it hit Netflix. There are many streaming options out there for the TV fan, but ChromeCast might be the most user friendly no matter who you’re buying for. Not only can you stream directly from your computer, but ChromeCast also just added Comedy Central, Sesame Street Go, Nickelodeon, TuneIn, Epix, YuppTV and Encore Play to its massive collection of apps (including HBO Go, Netflix, WatchESPN, and more), so the possibilities are basically endless.
The Walking Dead Survival Kit: Like it or not, we all need our own personal bug-out bag. After all, if there’s one thing Rick and the gang have taught us, it’s that you can never be too prepared. (Also try to stay away from a tribe of cannibals.) Save your friend the trouble of pricing out his or her own Walking Dead-inspired survival kit and just get them the whole shebang instead! It comes with emergency food and water rations, a first aid kid, an LED flashlight, space blankets, ponchos (for “severe weather”), leather work gloves, a waterproof match booklet, and procedural facemasks (duh), all packed into a military-style messenger bag. There are enough items here for at least two, so maybe the gift-ee will een share supplies with you when the zombie apocalypse hits!
Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver TV Remote: Unfortunately, this sonic screwdriver from ThinkGeek won’t let you send a recording of yourself back in time (you’d need a TARDIS for that — don’t blink!), but it will let you control your TV with all the flourish of a dashing Time Lord. This device comes in four modes: practice mode (so you can learn your control gestures), control mode (control your TV), quiet control mode (quietly control your TV?), and FX mode (aka the fun mode, complete with sounds and flashing lights!). The remote comes in two styles: Tenth Doctor and Eleventh Doctor (pictured above), and stores up to 39 programmable gestures. It’s the perfect present for any of your Whovian pals.
Sherlock Limited Edition Gift Set: Every fairytale needs a villain… and an epic special edition box set, to boot! That’s right, Cumberbitches. This limited edition gift set has it all: all three seasons of Sherlock, complete with “bonus features, all new commentaries, never-before-seen outtakes and exclusive collectibles including limited edition art cards and busts of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.” After consuming all of that extra content, your Sherlock-lovin’ bestie won’t just be satiated until that long-awaited Christmas special — they’ll be the most knowledgable fan out there. And as everyone knows: brainy’s the new sexy.
Ron Swanson Brooch: Do you know someone who loves bacon and eggs? Someone who’s seen every episode of Parks and Recreation at least three times? Someone who appreciates the art of hand-crafted oak, a good steak, and a strong mustache? (Is that someone me?) Well, wrap this carved wooden Ron F*****g Swanson brooch up in some sensible wrapping–brown paper will do– and prepare for an extraordinary reaction:
Everyone loves Ron Swanson. Everyone.
Joan Holloway Pencil Necklace: Joan Harris’ pencil necklace would make a thoughtful gift for a Mad Men fan who pays attention to detail (and loves Etsy). Heck, throw a Mad Men-themed Christmas party with a couple of themed cocktails, a Betty Draper-inspired tiki bar, and enough French music to get Megan Draper (gosh that’s a lot of Draper women) doing the shimmy! Just don’t invite anyone from the London office — we all know how that turned out.
Sailor Moon Season 1 Special Edition Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Pack: This limited edition Sailor Moon box set is the ultimate holiday gift for the very bravest of Sailor Scouts. With an all-new English dub and exclusive extra features, this collection is already something to twirl about, but it also boasts an 88-page booklet chockablock full of original art, character profiles, episode guides, and more! If you spent your childhood (or you know, last weekend) playing Sailor Moon with your best bud, this Blu-ray box set will make a great gift — and give you an excuse to watch the whole series all over again.
True Detective Big Hug Mug: For the friend who just can’t stop practicing their Matthew McConaughey impression (“Alright, alright, alright.”), this Etsy Big Hug Mug is perfect for fans who scoured episodes of True Detective for details on The Yellow King, already read the book its based on, owns every minimalist Rust Cohl print out there, and still can’t get enough. “Remember that mug from the police station? Well, that mug is flat circle…”
Time Lord Cuff Links: One more Doctor Who item, because I mean LOOK at those cufflinks! I wish I wore more suits because I’d wear these all. the. time. (Cough cough.) These delicate, intricately designed mini works of art would make a wonderful gift for that special Time Lord or Lady in your life. Sometimes just a hint of nerdiness goes a long way.
What else is on your list this year? Do you also have a hard time expressing your feelings without the aid Ron Swanson gifs? Let us know in the comments below or tell me on Twitter (@RachelHeine).
