Holiday Gift Guide 2014: Geek Chic

The once sparse and desolate arena of fashionable geek apparel is now overflowing with options. Companies like Her Universe paved the way for others to offer merchandise made to fit women, and men have more stylish options than ever, too. There’s much more than the graphic t-shirt available on the market, and you can dress up your look with more chic and sometimes subtle geek additions. Here are some ideas for wearables to give this holiday season:

112314_StarWars_Cardigan

Star Wars Symbol Cardigan – This Star Wars sweater from Her Universe is covered in Imperial and Rebels symbols. It’s balanced between the light and dark sides of the Force in black and white. It would look great with a button-up shirt and jeans or worn over a dress.

112314_CaptainAmerica_Watch

Captain America Stealth Shield Watch – While many of us rely on our phones to tell us the current time, watches are a much cooler way to keep track of the hours. ThinkGeek has a sturdy and attractive Captain America option that blends in with neutral colors instead of the red, white, and blue. That means the wearer can totally pair it with a suit.

112314_LordoftheRings_Leggings

Middle-earth Map Leggings – Never forget how to get to Mordor with these polyester/elastane Lord of the Rings leggings from Black Milk Clothing. They feature a map of Middle-earth based upon the one in the books, and they look fantastic with black tops. Plus, leggings are the most comfortable.

112314_Circuit_Necktie

Short Circuit Tie – This limited edition silk tie from Cyberoptix has a circuit board print and is available in multiple colors. The pattern is nerdy but subtle enough for you to feel comfortable wearing it to the office or to a business meeting.

112314_Batman_Purse

Batman Wallet with Ears – If you know someone who doesn’t like to drag a huge purse around and has warm and fuzzy feelings about Batman, this small wallet purse on a chain is perfect. The inclusion of ears makes it look like both Batman and Catwoman.

112314_DoctorWho_Necklace

Timey Wimey Necklace – Embrace the wibbly wobbly timey wimey and gift this Doctor Who necklace by Etsy seller Critical Hit Shop. The design has a Salvador Dali-esque vibe and captures one of the Doctor’s most memorable quotes.

112314_StarWars_Vans

Star Wars Hoth Vans – These epic Star Wars shoes by Vans feature the highlights of The Empire Strikes Back. They’ve got AT-ATs, snowspeeders, a wampa, and Luke hanging upside down in the wampa’s cave. What more could you ask for? They’re available in sizes for children, women, and men.

112314_DNA_Earrings

DNA Earrings – These 2″ rhodium-plated earrings from Boutique Academia would make wonderful presents for biologists, geneticists, or anyone who has an appreciation for science. They even have major and minor grooves. Boutique Academia has several other science and math jewelry options, too.

112314_HarryPotter_Dress

Harry Potter Hogwarts Crest Tank Dress – Give the Harry Potter fanatic in your life a dress that represents all four of the Hogwarts houses. This skater style dress from Hot Topic looks comfortable, and I appreciate that’s equal opportunity.

112314_StarTrek_Purse

Star Trek Uhura Clutch – Carrying a red purse doesn’t mean the same thing as wearing a red shirt in Star Trek. Especially when it’s as cool as this one. The design incorporates the look of a Starfleet uniform with gold Enterprise lining and a magnetic closure, and Uhura’s name is in script on the front bottom right. It’s not a giant purse, but it looks big enough to hold a tribble or two.

112314_Sherlock_Scarf

Sherlock Wallpaper Infinity Scarf – Sherlock seems to have the most popular wallpaper in all of television. This black and white design from Etsy seller Rooby Lane features the “bored” yellow smiley face, and since it’s made from t-shirt fabric, the scarf will be nice and soft. Plus, it’s cheaper than buying a replica of the scarf Sherlock wears in the series.
