HBO’s CEO Okay With HBO Go Password Sharing. Gonna Share?

Game of Thrones is the most pirated television show of the past two years. It’s a dubious honor but not surprising since the series is only available to HBO subscribers. To get around the restrictions, several people share their passwords to HBO Go, the company’s streaming service. And guess what? HBO’s CEO doesn’t care.

Last week came the news that CEO Richard Plepler told BuzzFeed and CBS This Morning that it’s no secret to anyone that people are sharing: “It’s not that we’re unmindful of it, it has no real impact on the business.” He even recognizes how it can get people hooked and potentially bring in new subscribers. As Plepler bluntly put it, “We’re in the business of creating addicts.” Well, at least he’s honest about it…

While we don’t recommend posting your HBO Go password in a public place for everyone to see, apparently, you don’t have to feel guilty about letting a friend borrow it. So, will you be going ahead and sharing? You can say that you have the CEO’s approval to take what is not really yours with fire and blood… or with a strong internet connection.

I know they have contractual obligations with the satellite and cable providers, but if they ever have the opportunity to offer HBO Go as a stand alone service I hope they jump on it. I would LOVE to cut ties with my provider, but HBO, and PBS have me by my fandoms. Waiting on the DVD release is not an option!
