In case you were wondering, it is actually possible for us to love Hayley Atwell just a little bit more. Ok, maybe a whole lot more. Last week’s San Diego Comic-Con was filled with hijinks and entertainment from the estimable Peggy Carter, and she brought all her castmates and friends along for the ride. It started with one little Dubsmash video to challenge the Agents of SHIELD and swiftly became an all-out war worthy of heroes. Even Jarvis got into it.
When the dust settled from the dropped gauntlet, there were two teams: Atwell and James D’Arcy on one side; Chloe Bennet and Clark Gregg accompanied by all the Agents of SHIELD on the other. Denizens of the internet and various social media platforms spent the weekend watching the two teams go head to head. Then Clark Gregg donned a certain red hat, and it really and truly felt like there was no way that Agent Carter and her sidekick had any chance of winning.
Consider the mic DROPPED. @realhayleyatwell #dubsmashwar2015 @clarkgregg A video posted by Chloe Bennet (@chloebennet4) on
The general reaction from the internet was some keyboard-smashing joy. Even though the mic had been, as Bennet says in the caption, dropped, the videos just kept coming. There was even some Taylor Swift thrown into the mix.
By the end of Comic-Con, it was pretty clear that Team Bennet/Gregg was winning. No one could beat Clark Gregg in that hat. Even Atwell and D’Arcy’s rendition of former pop star Bennet’s hit single wasn’t enough to put them over the top. And then Comic-Con ended, and everyone went their separate ways. We all thought it was over. What no one on the internet realized was that #TeamCarter had a few more tricks up their sleeves. On Wednesday, they unleashed the fury and the internet rejoiced.
No one dubs Queen quite like the Captain, hmm? It really felt like it was over even while the internet reeled with questions as to why Atwell and D’Arcy were with Evans in the first place. I’m guessing Atwell wanted to truly cement her victory, though. Late Wednesday night, she decided to break the internet with a few Cap/Peggy feels and a hint, maybe, of that dance that got cancelled so very long ago?
I’m pretty sure there is absolutely no way that Team Agents of SHIELD can beat #TeamCarter at this point, but I look forward to seeing them try. In the meantime, I probably should hunt up some really good Chris Evans reaction GIFs for whenever the ensuing follow-up videos need to be written up. How about this one:
