When Rachel McAdams confirmed she was joining the cast of Marvelâs Doctor Strange movie, there were two strong possibilities eyed by fans. The first was Clea, Doctor Strangeâs apprentice and lover, who just happens to be the rightful ruler of the Dark Dimension that is controlled by Strangeâs nemesis, the Dread Dormammu. The other possibility was Linda Carter, the Night Nurse from Marvelâs comic book universe who was romantically linked to Strange in the Doctor Strange: The Oath miniseries.
But if the latest rumors are true, then McAdams isnât playing either of those characters. According to a report on Latino Review, McAdams is portraying Christine Palmer, a young woman who was one of the leads of Marvel’s Night Nurse comic. But sheâs not the Night Nurse that shared a romance with Strange in the mid-2000s.
Back at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight indicated that Marvel Studios wouldnât let them call Rosario Dawsonâs character Linda Carter because the film division had plans for that character. Instead, Dawson portrayed the other Night Nurse, Claire Temple and many fans assumed that Linda Carter would appear in Doctor Strange.
Itâs possible that Marvel Studios is using the relationship between Carter and Strange as a template for the movie without actually using Carterâs original name. Or, perhaps aspects of Christine Palmer and Linda Carter will be merged together as a single characterâbut it’s not clear one way or the other. Nor has the report been confirmed by Marvel at this time.
Doctor Strange will star Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, with Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, and Mads Mikkelsen as the currently unrevealed villain. Doctor Strange will appear in movie theaters on November 4, 2016.
