Batman: The Animated Series debuted on September 5, 1992, and before its first week was over, fans were introduced to Harley Quinn in the episode known as “Joker’s Favor.” As originally envisioned, Harley was going to be a one-off character. However, the creative team behind the show loved using her and gave her an expanded role on the series, which eventually led to Harley’s first appearance in the DC Universe. Twenty five years later, Harley Quinn has never been more popular, and DC is uniting the current Harley Quinn creative team with her original creators to celebrate her anniversary.
Comic Book Resources was the first to report that DC will release the Harley Quinn 25th Anniversary Special #1 almost 25 years to the day after her animated debut. Writers Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Chad Hardin will contribute a story to the book, and Conner will even draw a few pages herself. Harley Quinn co-creator Paul Dini is also writing a story for the special, while Bruce Timm is providing a cover of classic Harley. DC co-publisher Jim Lee is drawing the other cover, which features Harley in her cinematic Suicide Squad costume.
Additionally, DC has revealed that the former creative team of Marvel’s most recent Howard the Duck series, Chip Zdarsky and artist Joe Quinones are also contributing to the Harley Quinn 25th Anniversary Special. DC also provided the official description for the issue.
“Celebrate twenty-five years of Harley Quinn with this collection of stories by some legendary Harley talent and some whoâve never drawn her before! How does Harley manage her insanely jam-packed life on Coney Island? What havenât we seen from her past with the Joker? And can even Harleyâs psychological acumen crack the twisted mind ofâ¦Robin, the Boy Wonder?”
Harley Quinn 25th Anniversary Special will be released on Wednesday, September 6.
