If you’re bringing home Solo: A Star Wars Story to your movie collection this fall, why not make a Millennium Falcon of your very own to go along with it? Star Wars fans who come to your door trick-or-treating will love the subtle nod to the Falcon’s jump to hyperspace. You don’t have to be a pumpkin carving maestro to make it, either. We’re here to give you the hyperspace how-to—no hydrospanner required.
What You Need
- Pumpkin (any color)
- Pumpkin carving tools
- Falcon carving template (download here)
- Scissors
- Pushpin
- Tape
- 2 red LED battery-powered lights
- Battery-powered strobe light or blue light
Get Started!
Step 1: Begin by using the pumpkin carving tools to hollow out the pumpkin as you normally do for a jack o’ lantern. Be sure to scrape as much of the stringy inside as possible.
Step 2: Next, print the carving template and cut it out, leaving plenty of space around the edges of the shapes. Tape it to the front of the hollowed-out pumpkin.
Step 3: Trace the edges of each gray shape with the pushpin. Press the pin firmly into the pumpkin so that when the paper is removed, the holes will be clearly visible.
Step 4: Remove the paper. Use the lines you traced with the pushpin as a guide and cut the shapes out of the pumpkin.
Step 5: Next, poke a small hole in the pumpkin just below the “windows” you just carved out. Gently push the red LED lights into the holes to mimic some of the lights in the Falcon’s cockpit.
Step 6: Drop the battery-powered LED strobe light inside, and your Millennium Falcon O’ Lantern is ready to make the jump into hyperspace!
