Ernest Cline‘s novel Ready Player One, about the fight between a small group of gamers and a ruthless giant corporation for the world’s most valuable commodity, the virtual reality OASIS, is really at its heart a love story that takes place across both the real and V.R. worlds. And now the two young lovers who competed with each other before fighting together have their very own musical tribute. But while “”Art3mis & Parzivalâ pays homage to them, its music video is a visual salute to the novel’s love of all things ’80s.
This song is the latest from GUNSHIP, who might be more qualified than any other musical act on the planet to capture the look, feel, and admiration of the ’80s that Ready Player One is obsessed with. It celebrates the relationship that develops between Wade Watts, known as Parzival in the OASIS, and the girl he falls for, known to him by her avatar Art3mis. The track, which the band says is inspired by the story’s spirit of “the power of imagination, the lack of cynicism, and the notion that one person can make a difference,” is a dreamy retro synth ode to their budding romance. It’s video though, with it’s pixel art inspired by ’80s video games and countless references, is a fitting tribute to the book.
If you think you spotted every reference there you probably missed a few, because the video, directed by Jason Tammemagi (also known as the artist Genuine Human), features over 80 of them, to “classic geeky games, movies, TV shows or albums.” The band’s love for Ready Player One doesn’t end there though, because they’ve set up their own quest to give away a GUNSHIP arcade machine for those who can spot all the video’s Easter eggs. You can learn how you can join the hunt here.
Forget the love between Parzival and Art3mis, that’s real dedication–both to the novel and the ’80s.
