Guillermo del Toro Lines Up a Remake of NIGHTMARE ALLEY

Guillermo del Toro‘s latest film, The Shape of Water, has already earned strong reviews that suggest it may be a player in the upcoming awards season. And del Toro isn’t stopping. He’s looking ahead to one of his future projects: a remake of the 1947 film noir classic, Nightmare Alley.

According to Variety, del Toro will direct and co-write the Nightmare Alley remake with screenwriter Kim Morgan. However, it will probably not be del Toro’s next movie because the script is still being written. The original Nightmare Alley was an adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s novel that followed a con man named Stan Carlisle (Tyrone Power) as he teamed up with Mademoiselle Zeena (Joan Blondell) for a wildly successful mentalist act before a betrayal sent Stan on a dramatic downward spiral. It’s not a story with fantastical elements, but we’re very curious to see how del Toro handles the updated version.

Additionally, del Toro is also working on Antlers, a new supernatural horror film based upon Nick Antosca’s short story, “The Quiet Boy.” Antosca and Henry Chaisson are writing the screenplay, but del Toro will only be producing this project. Hostiles director Scott Cooper is reportedly in talks to helm Antlers, which puts the focus on a young teacher and a troubled young boy in her care. After the teacher discovers that the boy’s father and brother have “a deadly supernatural secret,” she struggles to protect herself and the boy from the fallout. The Nightmare Alley remake and Antlers are both lined up at Fox Searchlight, the subsidiary studio behind The Shape of Water.
