Guillermo del Toro Clarifies PACIFIC RIM 2 Character Rumors

Back in 2014, Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro noted that Charlie Day and Burn Gorman would be back for the sequel and stated that he enjoyed writing for them. He also seemed to indicate that they would have a much larger part in the next movie. This led to rumors that Day and Gorman’s characters would be in the leading roles for Pacific Rim 2.

At this week’s Television Critics Association Press Tour, del Toro cleared up the misconception that Day and Gorman were supplanting Charlie Hunnam from the franchise. “No, no, no, Charlie Day has a great part but so does Charlie Hunnam,” said del Toro. “I think that everybody or most everybody that survived is back. The rest we killed. We killed half the cast.”

Presumably the list of returning performers includes Rinko Kikuchi, who played Mako Mori in the first Pacific Rim. Hunnam portrayed Raleigh Becket while Day and Gorman played the bickering scientists, Dr. Newton Geiszler and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb, respectively.

Pacific Rim takes place in a world where giant monsters (Kaiju) emerged from an interdimensional rift in the sea. In response, humanity created giant robots (Jaegers) to fight the Kaiju. Pacific Rim 2 will reportedly take place a few years after the original, and explore what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are no longer a threat.

Del Toro has suggested that there could be a Pacific Rim animated series that explores the origins of the Kaiju. Legendary Comics is also expanding the franchise with Pacific Rim comic books, which will be released later this year.

Pacific Rim 2 is expected to begin filming this fall, before smashing its way into theaters on August 4, 2017.
