Just in case your month of August needed a burst of cute, Gallery 1988 has got you covered with their upcoming Storytime: A Little Gallery Show by illustrator Joey Spiotto.
Spiotto takes some gnarly bits of pop culture and gives them the Little Golden Books treatment. Also, I did not know that Little Golden Books are still a thing with new volumes coming out of publisher Random House (there’s even digital and hardcover versions of their Frozen book out now).
Some of his earlier works have made the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Half-Life 2 all cute and cuddly, and he’s continuing that trend with a new selection of 50 pieces focused on films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Dredd, and TV shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad.
We’ve only got a couple of Spiotto’s pieces here, but you absolutely have to see his American Psycho (“It’s Hip to Be Square”) or his Pulp Fiction (“Say What Again, I Dare You”), which almost make you forget the bloody carnage that inspired them.
Storytime: A Little Gallery Show kicks off on August 1 from 7-10 pm and will run through August 16 at Gallery 1998 East, which is located at 7021 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90038. We’ve shown Gallery 1988 some love in the past, particularly during their Ghostbusters show earlier this year. Gallery 1988 West is currently running Scott C.’s Great Showdowns: The Return, which takes a second look some classic duos in film and pop culture.
