Greta Gerwig To Star/Produce/Write CBS HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Spin-Off Pilot

If a series goes 9 very successful seasons on network television, the discussion of a spin-off is inevitable. How I Met Your Mother has surpassed that mark and that conversation has indeed been had, probably many times over, as CBS has just ordered a pilot for, you guessed it (maybe?), How I Met Your Dad.

Now, the intriguing part is that they’ve enlisted critically acclaimed indie film star Greta Gerwig to star, produce, and be involved in the writing of the series should it get a greenlight from CBS.  Having co-written one of the few actual comedies that got award nominations last year, Frances Ha, with Noah Baumbach, it’s a throughly intriguing choice for CBS, a network where The Big Bang Theory and Two and Half Men reside.

We’ll see how much Gerwig will get to impart her own personal stamp on How I Met Your Dad, and if CBS wants to expand their brand of comedy to include a slightly more sophisticated audience. I can’t imagine it will be in black and white, but I’d be surprised if there was no interpretative dancing by Gerwig in it all.

Gain a little insight on what might be in store by reading this Nerdist interview with Gerwig.

Okay, I retract the latter part of my statement 🙂 Just read the news article that said its a completely different storyline. Eh, either way I’ll give it a season to see if its any good.

  2. FUzzy says:

As a reply to Justian, I am the complete opposite. Ted is one of the most annoying characters of television. I watch for Lily/Marshall and Barney. I do find the prospect of a show from the Mom’s POV interesting at least. But with the quick recap of her history in that last episode I wonder if the flushing out of her tale will be worth it

  3. justian says:

There’s two sides to every coin – You can’t define what makes the show successful. I watch it because of TED not BARNEY and find it annoying watching Marshal and Lilly. Greta is oddly one of those people you can watch do slightly nothing, like most of her movies and still keep watching. This generation is all about women power, I think they could easily have a woman Barney, named barney, no? It could never be as good as the original but who fuckin’ cares, T.V. shows are a dime a dozen. They canceled Freaks and Geeks and so many other brilliant shows because of ratings. So I hope this happens to at least have one season exist in the world. The first season of HIMYM was really quite iffy. Have you seen Two Broke Girls? That shit is supper dirty at times. It’s plausible

  4. Le'Ann Allen says:

I predict this will be cancelled by the second season. I love “Mother” and will give the “Dad” a fair shot, but what makes HIMYM so successful is the awesomeness and absurdity that is Barney Stinson. No way that can be duplicated. You could argue that perhaps they will cast the residential “man-whore” with a female (thus changing it slightly), but there is no way America will tolerate that in a primetime network show. It’s hypocritical but true. A dude can be sleazy and it’s funny. But can a woman do it with equal appreciation? Think about it.
