Greg Rucka & Michael Lark’s LAZARUS is Coming to TV

Good news, comic book fans! The Hollywood Reporter is reporting (sorry) that the Image Comics’ series Lazarus is being adapted for television, which is good news for people who love awesome things. Legendary Television is teaming with producers David Manpearl and Matt Tolmach to bring the action-packed comic to life.

Greg Rucka and Michael Lark released Lazarus in 2013 to much acclaim and rightfully so. The series is set in a future where rich and powerful families rule the world and its inhabitants. Each of the families has a personal bodyguard called a Lazarus, an unstoppable, generically engineered warrior who serves them loyally. The series focuses on Forever, a Lazarus who is slowly learning that nobody can be trusted, not even her own family. It’s the kind of comic that reminds you why you love the medium, just absolutely amazing stuff.

Between the two of them, Lark and Rucka have done some of the most prolific comic work for the past few decades. They worked together on the much-loved Gotham Central, the DC Comics series that many folks had hoped would be the basis for the Gotham TV show (sadly, that turned out not to be the case). Rucka is also the author of the incredible Jad Bell novels and Lark worked on The Winter Soldier comic series. Really, with this kind of pedigree, it was only a matter of time before Lazarus was scooped up by somebody.

The best thing about this news is that Rucka himself will be writing the series’ pilot. Lark is also on board as an executive producer, which has us hopeful that this show will be done right. The comic has a ton of world-building in each issue through its detailed backstories, so we know there is plenty for a TV show to explore. And what better way to prepare for the TV show than by reading the comic? Not only will it get you pumped up, but you’ll have a one-up on all your friends.
