GRAMMAR SLAM: CM Punk Explains “Me” vs. “I”

Welcome to CM Punk’s Grammar Slam, in which wrestling superstar CM Punk corrects your awful grammar.

Already this season, Punk has taken on the differences between “here” and “hear,” as well as the myth that “irregardless” is an actual word. On today’s episode, our musclebound word nerd takes on an issue that is far more common: When to use “I” and when to use “me.”

This one cut us deep: It hurts enough to see our wonderful friend Punk deal with online abuse on a weekly basis, but this time, Kevin P. came after us directly and wrote that Nerdist sucks — and that made us pretty sad. Thankfully, the emotional impact was softened by Punk defending our honor, and by seeing Kevin’s sub-par grammar get shut down by our host.

Kevin used “me” when he should have used “I”, which is actually an easy mistake to avoid. As Punk notes, “me” is a direct object whereas “I” is a subject. In the sentence in question, the pronoun that Kevin chose to use to refer to the subject, “me”, is an object pronoun. Kevin should have used “I”, which is a subject pronoun, instead of “we”, which is not.

Here’s a helpful hint if you’re still having trouble with this rule: make the sentence singular and see if the word you chose still makes sense. If the other subject in Kevin’s sentence was removed, it would read, “Me think so.” Dang, even writing that didn’t feel right. With “me” in place of “I” in this example, the sentence has no subject, which is a no-no.

Again, thanks for sticking up for us, Punk. It’s good to know that we have a top-notch grammarian such as yourself on our side.
