GOTHAM Announces Spring Return, Tease Iconic Batman Villain Joining the Show

Calling all Gotham fans: the long winter hiatus has been rough to get through, but this news is sure to cheer you right up, Joker style. FOX has announced a spring return date for the DC Comics series as well as a potentially huge casting addition!

During the 2017 Winter Television Critics Association press tour, FOX CEO Gary Newman revealed that Gotham will return in the spring on Monday, April 24 at its regular time slot (8pm) But don’t worry, you don’t have to wait four more months for more adventures with Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), as the series’ return (a.k.a. winter premiere as they’re calling it these days) airs Monday, January 16 at 8pm!

As for that new casting, The 100 villain Raymond J. Barry has landed a recurring role for the rest of the season. Deadline first reported that Barry will play the temple Shaman, a mysterious figure who enters Bruce’s life with the stated intention of unlocking the potential of his own mind. While the Shaman says the fate of Gotham depends upon Bruce becoming the man the city needs him to become, the truth behind his intentions proves to be far more sinister. Hm, does that sound a little bit like one of Batman’s most iconic villains Ra’s al Ghul to you? Because it certainly does to us. Comic book fans know that Ra’s wasn’t always a nemesis for Batman, but rather he started of as Bruce’s mentor. Is Gotham finally going to tell the story of Ra’s and Bruce?

But that wasn’t all that FOX announced at TCAs. Other spring premiere dates revealed were Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Tuesday, April 11 and Lucifer on Monday, May 1. And surprising no one, the network renewed critical and ratings success Empire for a fourth season—the series is set for its spring return on Wednesday, March 22.

FOX also announced the pick-up of two new original shows: a reboot of Love Connection hosted by Andy Cohen and Beat Shazam hosted by Jamie Foxx, slated for a summer premiere. Beat Shazam is a unique and interactive game show in which teams of two race against the clock and each other as they attempt to identify the biggest hit songs of all time. In the end, the team with the highest score will outlast the competition and go against Shazam, the world’s most popular song identification app, for the chance to win a cash prize.

When asked about a possible new season of The X-Files, both Newman and FOX President David Madden remained mum. “We hope so,” Madden said. “There are a lot of conversations going on.”
