Goonies never say die! They sing! Or at least thatâs the plan, according to the movieâs director, Richard Donner. Donner told Yahoo that as a part of the 30th anniversary for the 1985 film they are planning an Off-Broadway musical adaptation.
Weâre going to do an Off-Broadway; do you know what immersion theater is? Where thereâs no seats, the venue is you go into a warehouse and thereâs something happening in that warehouse and thatâs the play youâve come to see, only you become part of it and you travel through with actors. Weâre doing one on The Goonies. It will take another year or so but itâs going to be wonderful.
It’s as though all of the fans of The Goonies finally threw enough wishes into the well.
Reports of a possible sequel to the beloved film have long been rumored, and this is not the first time a stage version has been discussed, but now it seems as though it might really happen. The idea of an interactive theater experience seems appropriate for a movie about a treasure hunt. Imagine getting to work with the cast to find One-Eyed Willieâs treasure.
Heck, just imagine being a part of a chorus line of Sloths, doing the Truffle Shuffle. In any case, weâre excited about the possibilities.
What would you love to see from this musical version of The Goonies? And are there any other films that you think would translate well onto Broadway? Itâs our time to share our best ideas in the comments section below.
