Google+ Cheat Sheet

I kept hearing all the buzz about Google Plus and finally got in a couple of weeks ago.  Like with many other social sites I was confused at first and didn’t know what or how to do Google Plus.  I think I got the hang of it and it seems like a Twitter and Facebook mash-up with the ability to put people in “circles” or groups where you can then decide what you want to share with each group.  If anyone else is getting their Google Plus on here is a little cheat sheet that Simon Laustsen created to help us newbs out.

Any of  my fellow nerds on  Google Plus?  Are you going to be using it? If you are using Google Plus do you like it?  Do I like to ask lots of questions?

Would love an invite as well if still possible! palinure at gmail Thank you!

  2. I think google plus could eventually outshine Facebook, its only real obstacle comes from the sheer size of FB. I was thrilled to see Google take the right path, aiming ahead of Facebook’s current position instead of vying for the here and now. I wouldn’t be too surprised if FB goes the way of Myspace, however, that would be a ways off.

and I’d love an invite for google+ if you could kind sir.

  3. Aaron Davidson says:

I talk a lot of politics on FB, and always wish that some of my friends didn’t have to put up with it. Makes me feel like I’m being rude (but hey, it’s MY facebook!). I like the circles, but I think it might be a bit complicated-feeling for new, average users who have little incentive to leave FB.

I also only have a couple of friends on it right now though, and none of us are posting anything, so it’s kinda meh at the moment. I’m curious if it’ll take off at all.

    tnx danny

  5. Elia says:

Hi, would you pls send an invitation to
    storiease at gmail.com
    ?

  6. John says:

Google plus seems visually larger ( blog like ) and runs smoother than Facebook IMO. Since you’re in their “Eco System”… this makes it even more convenient. They’re doing a really good job with this.

  7. bryan says:

Danny, haven’t received my invite yet. [email protected]. thx!

  8. reversednormals says:

I like it much more than fb so far. I hope my friends and acquaintances all move over eventually. I appreciate the circles concept, and the interface. I like the widget from the app on my android as well. I have it on my home screen.

  9. Beth Kaelin says:

    Invite me! [email protected] šŸ˜€

  10. Wickedgrl80 says:

I’m totally digging Google+ Less clutter than facebook and more options than twitter.

  11. Jimiscot says:

I would like to try out Google+

Everything I have seen about it seems pretty cool.

  12. JetpackBlues says:

It’s going to die just like Buzz did. And it’s because they’re doing this invite crap to get it started. Oh, and then they locked out the ability to sign up if you received an invite.

How the fuck are people supposed to use it if you do your utmost to keep them from trying it out?

Besides requiring a public profile (i.e., searchable in Google) and fucking everyone’s privacy from the get-go, poor word of mouth gave Buzz the equivalent of Internet Polio. Google+ will suffer the same fate, I fear.

No, I wouldn’t like an invite.

  13. Anyer says:

I know of several friends who have sworn they will abandon Facebook forever when Google+ is out of it’s invite stage. Seems like a general consensus of lots of people I seen. With the following aspect, it sounds much like Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook all melded into one.

Sadly I have no Google+ account – could I grab an invite? [email protected]. Cheers!

  14. Gwif says:

    I’d love an invite!

  15. Harrison says:

Been looking to get on G+ for awhile .

    [email protected]

  16. Staf says:

Hi Danny, really excited about giving this a go, it looks so much more dynamic than FB, may I have an invite?!

  17. David says:

Does g+ have pages that aren’t people like Facebook? For example, if I search for “Nerdist” on g+, I don’t come up with anything.

    • Danny Damore says:

All invites went out. If anyone else wants one just let me know.

@David it looks like there are no fan pages or business pages yet. Google said they are working on it.

  18. Ivan says:

Made a new one: [email protected]
    Thanks a ton!

  19. Ivan says:

“You must be over a certain age to use this feature.”
    Ah, well. Thanks anyway, Danny.

  20. Art says:

I see it as a fresh start. When most of us first got our Facebook, we we’re in high school (Or lower). We grew up, and Google+ feels like a way to start over as an adult in Social Networking. Less about pithy crap, more about useful tools to keep in touch and in general improve my internet experience.

I’m on Google+, and so far i’m loving it. Its only a matter of time before i’m using it in place of FB, rather then in addition to. I look forward to what Plus has to offer in the future.

  21. Meli says:

I hopped on board the Google+ train this morning and I really like the whole idea of the circles and the ability to follow people without having to friend them. I’ve even tossed it on my phone to experiment there.

  22. Brett D says:

I’m really liking Google+ except the fact that it’s not being very social at the moment – my circles are kind of small still (granted I only even have ~100 people on my facebook as well). I would like to see how it goes full swing when I can have circles subdivided of online communities I’m a part of as well as friends once everyone can simply register for it – I think it has fantastic mass potential to be the center of my internet world. Google already owns everything else of mine computing wise – android phone, use chrome as my browser of choice, use google calendar for my personal calendar, google holds my contacts, one of my more active email accounts – they may as well just have full reign over it all.

I, for one, welcome my Google overlords.

  23. Ivan says:

    [email protected]
    Please, and thank you.

  24. Greg Zilm says:

Granted if I’d made my last comment on Google+ it would be easy to go back and fix my typos after the fact.

  25. Greg Zilm says:

One of my friends gave me an invite last week. I’m yet to understand the really need for Google+. It’s not bad but there’s nothing in it that will make the average computer user (i.e. most of my real world friends) go I’m going to give up my Facebook account for this. When Facebook came along and killed MySpace it was a matter of good timing. MySpace gave average people an interest in social networking but Facebook gave people an easy social networking experience so they were relatively quick to adopt a significantly improved user experience over what MySpace offered. Google+ is an improvement over Facebook in a lot of ways the average user will never notice. People don’t change platforms in mass for slight improvements when what they are used to basically works for them. It’s the reason Window’s still dominates the PC market when any “techie” can spend hours explaining why such and such Linux distro completely blows Windows out of the water. For many people Facebook is a convenient way to keep in touch with friends, a central hub for communication, an easy way to share vacation photos or a funny video off of You Tube. Google+ does all of these same things but the value it adds to the social networking experience isn’t the same as the value Facebook added over MySpace. At the end of the day if most of my “average computer user” friends stay on Facebook then no matter how much more I like Google+ it won’t matter because I use social networks to be social not to sit around alone going “this is so much better.”

  26. mattshow says:

I’m on it, and I’m digging it so far. Like a few other people have said, I prefer the Circles interface to Facebook’s “lists”. I also prefer the non-symmetric “following” paradigm to the Facebook “friends” system. There’s no confirming friend requests, or the awkward de-friending.

But mostly it’s just nice to have a fresh start, with the benefit of a few years of experience using Facebook. I feel like I have a better of what to do (and what not to do) to get what I want from a social network while avoiding the pitfalls.

  27. Exploding Haggis says:

Using it… and loving it thus far. Can’t wait to see what they do when it goes public.

  28. Rich says:

There is also a fantastic crowd-sourced Google doc that has a bunch of great examples of usage as well as shortcuts and tips.

  29. David says:

I would appreciate an invite. homer.simpian AT gmail DOT com

    Thanks.

  30. Agrajag says:

I like it. It’s what Facebook would be if Facebook fixed all the stuff I hate about it (or what it might be if Facebook ever even pretended to give a single crap about its users). So Facebook is getting ditched as soon as it becomes convenient.

  31. Rachel says:

I’m loving the circles so far. I only have a couple of friends and I’m still getting the hang of it, but thumbs up so far.

  32. bryan says:

    invite please! šŸ™‚ [email protected]

  33. Gordon Adams says:

I’m digging it so far and will try hard to keep it less about, trite and over-sharing. Arranging circles is working great and hopefully those making the switch understand that this is not a popularity contest and a true networking/sharing site. Fingers crossed.

  34. Hector says:

I’m using it and I really like it. I’m still getting the hang of it.

  35. Christy G says:

I can realistically imagine a point when Google+ could become my “front entrance” to the internet. If I had a Google search bar and a GMail sidebar or tab on my G+ page, things might just get real.

  36. Brandon McGovern says:

I have to ask Danny, did you send Simon a massage?

  37. Hunter says:

I am really curious to try it, I’m getting sick of facebook. From what I have seen there are simillar tools on both sites, but to sperate people on facebook takes too much time. It would just be so much easier to start from scratch.

P.S. I would love an invite! thanks Danny

  38. Enola41 says:

Once Google+ goes public I’m getting rid of my facebook account. I’ve been waiting for ages now for a viable alternative and I don’t think that I’m the only one.

  39. I’m using it, but I definitely need to get the hang of it. It doesn’t seem that great, but it’s just a matter of more people I know getting it.

  40. Liz says:

I am loving it simply because it’s not cluttered with the inane updates/photos of people I don’t really care about. “Why don’t you delete them?” you may ask… well, sometimes I do want to know what’s going on and would like to avoid the awkward ‘friend request’ again.
I really like the sharing to specific circles. I know FB can do something similar but since you begin by placing people into circles in Google+ it just seems easier. Also the photo editing from within the site.
The ability to follow people and add others to circles that you aren’t interested in is nice. I do hope they come up with a way to filter your stream to more than one circle instead of all or one at a time.
I like it and hope it sticks around for a while. And that a lot of my FB ‘friends’ don’t find it, like my mom. I love you mom but I still want a social network that you aren’t in.

  41. I’m using it… I like it because its like a lite version of facebook.

that site is just way too busy and involved. a big departure from what it was when I first got on there.
