Google Announces Android TV Device, the NEXUS Player

Google is taking their next step to take over the world of television with the announcement of their very own Roku-like set-top gizmo, the Nexus Player. Made in collaboration with ASUS, the Nexus Player will be the first device that runs on Google’s Android TV platform, which they announced back in June during Google I/O. Like the Fire TV device that Amazon announced in April, the Nexus Player comes with a sweet little remote control that responds to voice commands, for all the fancy people out there who are too good for pressing buttons. It’s also quite sporty; mainly because if you play a lot of hockey, you may feel the urge to grab your stick and slap shot this thing around. I mean, look at it:

The Nexus Player will come with 8GB of internal memory, an 802.11ac Wi-Fi connection, all the features we knew and loved about the Chromecast, and will also have game controller support– which, as you probably expected, is being sold separately. It’s actually a pretty sexy looking controller, too.

There’s an interesting conversation to be had about the future of television and whether or not your traditional cable networks will be replaced by the many existing content-streaming platforms such as Netflix, Crackle, etc. Even PlayStation just released their very own TV box yesterday, which will definitely win over folks if Sony continues going after original programming like Powers.

No official price has been announced yet, though Recode is claiming that Nexus player will run for $99, with the sleek ASUS game controller addition going for $39. You can pick one of these bad boys up in stores on November 3rd or pre-order one this Friday.

Does the Nexus Player look like it belongs in your living room? Shoot your thoughts into the comments below.

I think these set top boxes will get better over time.  I really hope things like this & Google Fiber take off all over the country.  Been saying for a long time that someone needs to  push these greedy cable companies out.
