Have you ever been up late at night, marathoning some Golden Girls re-runs on the Hallmark Channel, and thought to yourself, “I wish I was out on the linai on a warm Miami night, having cheescake and sipping coffee with Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia, hearing stories about Sicily or St. Olaf.”
Well, you might not be able to have that exact experience, but coming soon, if you happen to be in the New York area, you can have the next best thing — the Washington Heights neighborhood in Northern Manhattan is actually getting a Golden Girls-themed restaurant this September. Approrpiately enough, the location of this new eatery is going to be at the Sofia Storage Building — yes, I think Estelle Getty would be proud.
According to the folks at DNAInfo, the new restaraunt is going to be called the Rue La Rue Café, and will be located at 4396 Broadway. It seems the entire idea for a Golden Girls themed restaraunt was thought up by Michael J. LaRue, a close friend of late actress Rue McClanahan, who fans of the TV show know best as the ever-horny Blanche Devereaux. LaRue plans to decorate the café with memorabilia he inherited from McClanahan, including what one assumes is a sizable amount of Golden Girls memorabilia. The show’s rights owners at Disney are apparently allowing the café to manufacture its very own Golden Girlsâ merchandise using images from the television show.
Rue McClanahan’s son Mark Bisch is a partner in this new restaurant as well, and LaRue also says Rose Nylund herself, Betty White, will be among the honored guests for the restaurant’s grand opening this fall. The café will be open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on weekends from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Are you stoked about the notion of a Golden Girls theme retaurant? Are you like me, and are hoping it’s so successful they start franchising? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
