GODZILLA and PACIFIC RIM Sequels Get New Titles

GODZILLA and PACIFIC RIM Sequels Get New Titles

Next year, King Kong may have Legendary Pictures’ giant monsterverse all to himself in Kong: Skull Island, but the sequels to Pacific Rim and Godzilla have staked out their dates for 2018 and 2019, respectively. But now Pacific Rim: Maelstrom and Godzilla 2 have apparently received new titles, which may offer some hints about what to expect in those films.

Legendary Pictures sent out a press release naming the sequels as Pacific Rim: Uprising and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Uprising could carry a few different meanings in the Pacific Rim franchise. As you may recall, the kaiju emerged from a portal at the bottom of the ocean that led to another world. That’s the most literal description of a monster uprising, but it could also mean that John Boyega’s new jaeger pilot and his companions may take a stand against the current ruling powers on Earth. The first Pacific Rim hinted that the ordinary survivors weren’t exactly treated fairly by those in charge. Perhaps that could lead to an open rebellion in addition to fighting the returning kaiju threat.

As for Godzilla, the “King of the Monsters” description was used in the title of the American version of the very first Godzilla movie that made its North American debut in 1956. “King of the Monsters” is a nickname that’s stuck with Godzilla ever since. Using that as the subtitle for Godzilla 2 suggests that we’ll see even more creatures this time. Although we’re particularly hoping to get modernized takes on Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. We’re also partial to Mechagodzilla, but at least one of the greatest monsters has to be saved for a potential third Godzilla movie!

Pacific Rim: Uprising will be released on February 23, 2018; and Godzilla: King of the Monsters will follow on March 22, 2019.
