In 300, Gerard Butler’s Leonidas led his soldiers against the unbeatable Xerxes and the Persian army. Spoiler Alert: Things did NOT go well for Leonidas. Now Butler gets to feel what it’s like on the other side of the fence in the new Super Bowl trailer for Gods of Egypt.
Rather than portray a king, Butler plays the Egyptian god of darkness, Set, who in his quest for power (because as a GOD, more power is hard to come by?) has taken the throne of the Egyptian empire as his own. It is up to a band of mortals and another god, Horus (Game of Thrones Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), to stop him.
This movie is the definition of “spectacle.” The action scenes look insane. There is one point where Butler and Coster-Waldau’s characters turn into what look like Megazords to battle each other. What this movie may lack in historical accuracy, it will definitely make up for in visuals.
The movie will also give us a chance to see Chadwick Boseman and Elodie Yung in action roles prior to their MCU debuts later this year. Yung will be portraying Elektra is season 2 of Daredevil, as Boseman will of course be playing Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War.
Gods of Egypt, also starring Brenton Thwaites and Geoffrey Rush, opens in theaters February 26th.
