Jeff Daniels and Jack O’Connell Hit the Old West in the First Trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s New Miniseries

Director Steven Soderbergh may have ended his cinematic hiatus with Logan Lucky, but that doesn’t mean he’s finished with the world of television. Next month, Soderbergh will hit Netflix with the Western miniseries Godless, whose first trailer dropped this morning. While it’s short on plot, it’s pretty heavy with atmosphere and symbolism.

That trailer seems to be more about establishing the mood of Godless rather than setting up the story and characters. If we didn’t know what the series was about, it would be pretty hard to figure it out from these clips. Fortunately, Entertainment Weekly had a helpful breakdown of the show’s premise.

Godless takes place in 1880, as former outlaw Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell) finds himself on the run from his ex-partner, Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels), and the rest of his old gang. Roy’s only sanctuary in the West is a New Mexico town called La Belle, which has no men at all. Instead, women rule in La Belle, including Michelle Dockery’s Alice Fletcher.

It’s kind of amazing that almost none of that info seems to come across in the trailer itself. The poster for Godless on EW’s site offers a better taste of what’s to come by teasing a showdown between Frank’s gang and some heavily armed women who are defending their home.

Soderbergh co-created Godless with Scott Frank, and Frank directed the seven-episode series. Godless will premiere on November 22.
