Whether you enjoyed 2016’s Ghostbusters reboot or not (and we’re not here to start THAT debate again), one of the major problems with it was that it didn’t connect in any way to the original 1984 movie and its (vastly inferior) 1989 sequel. Why wouldn’t you want to acknowledge the universe of one of the funniest and most lauded horror comedies of all time? This put off a lot of fans, and the original films’ director, and producer of the reboot, Ivan Reitman is acutely aware of that and issued a big mea culpa at the IDW Comics panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2017, and his plan to remedy it.
On this episode of Nerdist News, Jessica Chobot takes us through Reitman’s comments regarding the comic book storyline that will see the Venkman-Stantz-Spengler-Zeddemore universe crossover with the Gilbert-Yates-Holtzmann-Tolan universe. “I thought it would be great to try it out through these wonderful comics,” Reitman said at the panel, owing to the fact that the rebooted characters have been much more warmly received in comics form than film. And with the 35th anniversary of the original Ghostbusters film coming up in 2019, Reitman sure seems itching to pull this trick on the big screen.
“I thought if there was a way,” Reitman continued, “particularly in future films we’re working on, to bring them all together, it would be much more satisfying and much more fun.” Our guess is they’d completely ignore the fact that the original Ghostbusters actors all made cameo appearances as unrelated characters in the 2016 movie. It’s definitely not set in stone, but if we ever hope to see another Ghostbusters movie on the big screen, this IDW comic series might be the key to how it could work.
