“Ghostbusters, 0 B.C.”

Ghostbusters 0 B.C.

A Photoshop contest asked me what it would look like if my favorite movie took place in another era.  This was my answer.

Mike Phirman is a comedian/musician/Photoshop Jedi and has just signed on as a Nerdist contributor! Get his amazing music here.

EDITOR’S NOTE: YES. This pic has been around for years. Phirman made it for a Fark contest (which he surprisingly didn’t win but I think came in second). I love it so much I just wanted to use it as his launching point.

The picture on this post seems to be broken. I’m only seeing the top of a picture frame, not the full picture. Do you have a link to this somewhere else? I like to post this online at least once a year (Easter), and I’d like to start posting a link related to Mike Phirman since he’s the original artist. But I didn’t see a copy of it on his website. Thanks!

  2. Mark Edsall says:

  3. Matt Storm says:

  4. Bruno says:

ROFLMAO! I need that to hang next to my alien last supper.

  5. Chris Hardwick says:

Jessica, you knew what this job was when you signed on for it. And would it KILL you to use fabric softener???

  6. Chris, we talked about this. Pants OFF when you’re visiting your own site. Geez! I know the other nerdists and I are getting sick of doing your damn laundry.

  7. Andrew says:

Mike, no insult was intended and I realize that saying “stealing” outright wasn’t the most tactful way to question the originality of the picture. But there’s also not really a tactful way to ask that question, especially when talking about an old and oft repeated Internet meme.

So my apologies if the initial question was a bit abrasive, and thanks for the link. Glad to finally put a name to an image that my friends and I have loved for years!

  8. stubby says:

Well done, Mike Phirman. I feel like you should open a hamburger joint built around your soon to be famous “Phirburger”.

  9. that picture is priceless Mike Phirman is a Go….errr a really awesome dude.

  10. Patti says:

Phantastic Photoshop Phirman! I love it!! I am sorry people accused you of stealing. Chris has already told us that you are a Jedi with Photoshop, so I believe you when you say you created this brilliant work of art! Also, congrats on becoming a contributor, Mike! Yaaaaaaay!

  11. Chris Hardwick says:

Awwww, I LOVE to see contributors interacting! Makes me all warm, then suddenly cold….OHFUCK I just peed.

  12. C.A.B. Fredericks says:

Forgery! You lie! Teach the controversy! 9/11 was an inside job! Show us your birth certificate! Go back to… to… to… where the hell are Phirmen from, anyway?

  13. Jessica Barton says:

Hooraaaaaaaay Mike Phirman! Can’t wait to read your posts!

  14. Mike Phirman says:

    Hi guys,
I totally understand why it’s hard to believe I made that picture. You don’t know me; you don’t know that I’m somebody that would absolutely NOT take credit for someone else’s work; and that picture has been around the internet for a long time. Since January 31, 2004 to be exact.

To prove that I actually made the original “Ghostbusters catching Jesus” picture (short of sending you the original .psd), here is the Fark.com contest for which I made it. Though most of the pictures (including it) have been removed, please note the contest Theme on top and that I posted “something” at 08:54:01 AM.

    http://www.fark.com/cgi/comments.pl?IDLink=812539&startid=6069719

Now before you say, “Proof? There’s no picture there. That could have been anything,” go to the next page and find the comment: “Good one Phirm! I guess the title of that would be Holy Ghostbusters?” (03:47:00 PM)

    http://www.fark.com/cgi/comments.pl?IDLink=812539&startid=6071458

That was on Jan. 31, 2004. You won’t find any postings or references to that picture before that.

Since it was for a contest, I didn’t put my name on the actual picture, and immediately, people started putting theirs and their logos on it. While I love that people like it, it’s kind of a bummer to see something of yours get swept away without your name on it.

(See it happening today: I just put a video up on YouTube last week called “Chicken Monkey Duck” that someone has already reposted on their account, but only after trimming my name off the beginning and end.)

As far as the title, I suppose technically it would be either “0 A.D.” or “0 C.E.” (since it’s, like, a few days after he died (and “33 A.D.” would be 33 years after that picture)), or “0 -33, B.C.” since it’s 33 years after “before Christ”. “illuminaughty” was probably right—I should have just stuck with “Holy Ghostbusters”. Maybe wordpress will let me change it…

Despite the controversy, I do hope you’re enjoying the picture!

  15. Sally says:

    Hooray for Phirm contributions!
Today my best friend called me, very excited, because she saw the Ghostbusters car in a random parking lot in Santa Monica.
    It’s a Ghostbustery day.

  16. carey brown says:

Yes, or more accurately: 33 C.E. (Doh!)

  17. carey brown says:

Uh, shouldn’t the date be: 0 C.E.? Not to be a nerd, or anything…

  18. Nicofopolous says:

I’m going to have to agree with Chris on both the awesome-nitude of this work and the kindness that is the Phirm.

    Well done Mike!

  19. Chris Hardwick says:

Mike, Andrew: I LITERALLY watched Phirman made this picture in his apartment in Westwood years ago. He made it for a Fark contest. I’m actually shocked it didn’t win (I think some chariot race with “Gone In Sixty Seconds” won–CLEARLY inferior).

Mike is the NICEST most genuine guy in the world and I don’t particularly appreciate the accusations of thievery.

  20. my_leisure says:

Oh and Phirman’s a Farker? Right on!

  21. my_leisure says:

Someone also took this as inspiration for this piece of art

    Good old Ascension Busters

Not sure if this is better quality or not…it is bigger

  23. Mike says:

Yeah that pic has been around for a LONG time (at least 5-6 years), looks like all he did was frame it.

  24. Jaron says:

    Sacrilarious!!

  25. Simon says:

Oh my G! I want to hang this on my wall. Any possibilities for a higher res version?

  26. Aoife says:

Phirm wouldn’t steal! He has too much being awesome to do.

And the Catholic education in me is screaming how this is inaccurate. It really should be ‘Ghostbusters 33A.D’

  27. Andrew says:

So that’s been floating around the ‘net for at least three years:

    http://m.digg.com/movies/Ghostbusters_vs_Jesus

Proof your guy shopped it instead of stealing it?

  28. wouldn’t it be “Ghostbusters, 33 A.D.”?

  29. mella22101 says:

Could I request a couple other faces to be photoshopped on there as well? Would make a great gift!

  30. Bonnie says:

This was the background on my iPhone for the longest time. Nice work, Phirman!

  31. Aaron M.K. says:

Makes sense that God’s most perfect creation (a-la The Ghostbusters) would finally turn against him like a young Zeus turned against his Titan father.
