It’s been a very long time since John McTiernan directed a film in Hollywood. And considering that McTiernan’s resume includes Die Hard, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Predator, Last Action Hero, and The Hunt For Red October, that’s a lot of talent to be left on the shelf! But earlier this month, McTiernan made an unexpected comeback with the debut of his live-action trailer for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands.
Via Vulture, McTiernan’s Ghost Recon Wildlands trailer is called “The Red Dot,” and it’s just over 90 seconds of awesomeness. The short starts with the U.S. Army’s elite special operations unit (the Ghosts) on the verge of taking out some targets from a distance. But the real star of the video is the curious white cat who quickly becomes intrigued by the movement of a sniper laser. This was actually a brilliant way to get a great performance out of that feline, because what cat can resist chasing a red dot? The payoff for that gag was particularly entertaining.
According to Vulture, McTiernan also shot a second trailer for Ghost Recon Wildlands “with more traditional action,” and we can’t wait to see that once it’s released. As for McTiernan himself, his 14-year absence from Hollywood stems from his involvement with a plot to to illegally wiretap phone calls of a producer almost 17 years ago. For that offense, McTiernan served just under a year in prison, and he’s paid his debt. While McTiernan is reportedly working on a new feature film, we’d love to see him get a second chance to deliver big budget action films. He’s clearly still got what it takes, and we’re eager to see what he does next.
