Ghost House Pictures to Reboot THE GRUDGE

Remakes and reboots are a necessary evil of the entertainment industry and even more so when it comes to horror. We all know this by now, right? While it may be easy to groan at the thought of a remake or a reboot, let us not forget that David Cronenberg’s The Fly and John Carpenter’s The Thing were both remakes and have now become modern horror classics.

Today Deadline.com announced that Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe will reboot the 2004 J-horror hit The Grudge. Wait, what?

The Grudge starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and was based on the Japanese horror film Ju-on, written and directed by Takashi Shimizu. Shimizu returned to direct Gellar in the American remake which was released in the wake of The Ring, another J-horror adaptation that hit the states and became wildly popular. J-horror was all the rage early in the 2000’s seeing multiple American remakes like The Eye and Pulse follow suit.

The thing that is such a head scratcher about rebooting The Grudge is not so much that it has only been ten years since the first American version came out (hello The Amazing Spider-Man!) but that J-horror is so far from what’s hot in the genre right now. Sure, in The Grudge ghosts are involved, and yes, ghosts are super popular in horror at the moment, but right now it seems like familial hauntings are on trend, not random acts of ghostly-ness that take place in a land far, far away. Of all the properties for Ghost House to revisit, why The Grudge? Why not return to the other haunted flick that came out around the same time: Boogeyman.

You totally forgot about Boogeyman, didn’t you? Don’t worry, that’s what I’m here for!

There is no word yet on a director or release date for The Grudge reboot but Midnight Meat Train screenwriter Jeff Buhler is set to pen the new script.
