We finally have our first good look at Paul Rudd as Ant-Man in costume — this time, human sized and not ant-sized, as per Marvel Studios’ recently released teaser trailers. Entertainment Weekly is running a cover story on Marvel’s biggest gamble yet (effectively replacing last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy as “Marvel’s biggest gamble”) and the troubled production that ended up losing Ant-Man its writer/director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) who had been developing this movie for Marvel Studios for well over a decade, since 2001. Director Peyton Reed ended up replacing Wright after Marvel conducted a long search for someone new to helm the movie.
Rudd won’t be playing the more well known Ant-Man, Dr. Henry Pym, who in the MCU is older and played by Michael Douglas (I’ll forgive this movie a lot of things if we get a flashback of young Dr. Pym wearing an Ant-Man costume that’s straight out of the old comics. I’m just sayin’.) Instead, Rudd will be playing Scott Lang, who, in the comics anyway, stole Pym’s costume and size-changing abilities in an effort to save his young daughter, who would eventually grow up to be the Young Avengers’ member Stature. Stature was recently killed off, but as one is likely to do in the Marvel Universe, I hear she’s getting better any minute now, just in time for a Scott Lang-starring Ant-Man title where she will co-star.
Ant-Man, which also co-stars Evangeline Lilly and Corey Stoll, is the official end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Phase Two” after Avengers: Age of Ultron, and is due to hit theaters on July 17th. Check out the first good look at Rudd as the title hero below:
