Twenty-seven years ago, Marty McFly laced up his Nike Mags, hopped on a hoverboard he borrowed from a little girl, and was chased through a bizarre-looking imagination of what downtown 2015 would look like in Back To The Future Part II. Even though the kicks weren’t on screen for long, they became iconic for reasons both nostalgic and aesthetic: It’s a fun and enduring movie, and the shoes just look awesome.
With the anniversary of the movie looming, Nike spent this decade bringing the shoes to fruition, first with a limited-edition, non-self-lacing run of 1,500 pairs that were sold for charity in 2011. Then, it was announced last year that a full-featured version of the Nike Mag would be released in 2016. Michael J. Fox even wore a pair during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Well, it’s 2016 now, and it’s finally happening.
It’s kind of a good-news-bad-news situation, though: The good news is that they’re getting a general release very soon, but only 89 pairs are being produced (in reference to the year Back to the Future IIÂ was released). It won’t be easy to secure some Mags: They’re only being released via a raffle for a $10 donation per entry, but we’re not too beaten up about it considering the donations will benefit The Michael J. Fox Foundation and help their efforts to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
The raffle is open now until October 11th, and the winners will be announced on the 17th. You can buy as many entries as you’d like, so head over to Nike’s website for more details and don’t feel too bad if you blow a paycheck on trying to get a pair; it’s for charity, after all.
