What’s that old adage about having too much of a good thing? Whatever it is, I’m sure it doesn’t apply to Batman and thank goodness that DC Comics agrees with me, because today sees the release of Batman Eternal #1, a new weekly series that will take us on a journey through one of the most insane years in Gotham City’s storied history.
In order to tackle such a towering task, DC has assembled a veritable rogues gallery of creative talent including writers Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Ray Fawkes, John Layman, Kyle Higgins and Tim Seely, and artists Jason Fabok, Trevor McCarthy, Dustin Nguyen, and Andy Clarke. With such a formidable ensemble behind it, it’s no surprise that Batman Eternal looks to reshape the very face of Gotham as we know it.
The festivities kick off with a three-issue arc penned primarily by Snyder and Tynion, which gives us flashes of the series’ horrific endgame before taking us back 51 weeks earlier to the spark that lit the proverbial powderkeg. Speaking with USA Today, Tynion said that the central question of Batman Eternal is, “What is the first step you would take if you wanted to rip everything away from Batman?” We’ll just have to wait and see, but Tynion also added that “Scott and I never thought they’d let us get away with [it],” so take that as you will.
Honestly, if there’s a better way to celebrate Batman’s 75th anniversary, I can’t think of it. In the meantime, you’ll have to make do with this preview of Batman Eternal #1, issue #4, and the covers for issues #1-6.
