Get Lost in Anthony Petrie’s Awesome Pop Culture Maps

The best movies take you completely out of your normal surroundings and place you somewhere new and exciting. By the time you leave the theater, you find yourself wondering what else is in that world that you could explore. New York City artist Anthony Petrie takes that wondering to a whole new level with an incredible collection of maps and charts inspired by pop culture and film.

These charts and maps are the kind of artwork you could proudly display on your wall based on beauty alone. They are also great conversation starters as you can see he drew inspiration not just from the physical locations of movies like Jurassic Park, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Jaws, but also allowed himself to get creative with the overall shape and tone of the maps he was creating. Get lost in a star map alongside Luke, Leia and Han. Explore the beaches and keep an eye out for sharks. Go on an adventure with Indiana Jones.

“Whilst in general my heart is colder than the Fortress of Solitude, I do harbor love for the films I choose to pay homage to. The amount of times that goes into each poster kind of requires you to be a fan, and I actually end up really enamored with each film at the end of the process,” Petrie told the Things To Do In LA blog when asked how much of a fan he was of all the films for which he has created corresponding pieces of art. He also admitted that one piece specifically was not a favorite film, and he would never again go through the torture of watching something he didn’t love over and over just for a good idea.

If you live in the LA area, make sure to stop by Gallery 1988 West on Melrose Avenue to see these beauties in person. They will be on display as part of his first solo show at the gallery until January 24th.
