The Barden Bellas will be up against some serious competition in Pitch Perfect 2: a cappella group Pentatonix is joining the cast as their new rivals. The group won the third season of NBC’s The Sing-Off in 2011 and have released a few albums since then. Members Scott Hoying, Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and said they won’t be playing themselves in the film, but we’ll definitely be able to tell it’s them. In order to retain their signature sound, the members of the group arranged the song they were given. And they’ll stick to singing; none of them has any dialogue.
Pentatonix spent a full 12 hour day on set, and Hoying stated they’re “wearing some pretty interesting things.” Given the kinds of outfits we saw in the original Pitch Perfect, “interesting” seems like a suitable description. They got involved with Pitch Perfect 2 because of mutual friends. Deke Sharon, who arranged music both on The Sing-Off and Pitch Perfect, and the film’s publicist, helped get Pentatonix in the door. Fans also tweeted at the producers and asked for the Pentatonix to be cast. Since Pentatonix is one of the more well known a cappella groups out there, it seems like an aca-natural fit.
If you’re not familiar with Pentatonix, you can improve your Wednesday by spending some quality time with their YouTube channel. Here are a couple of my favorites:

I died from excitement. Came back to life with angels singing… sorry… PTX singing, and I died again. Seriously though, I heard a long beep and that was the end of it.
