Gerard Way Unveils New BATMAN: BLACK AND WHITE Statues (Exclusive)

As the world turns, and geopolitics rumble, we often find ourselves realizing that all  the problems that encompass the world aren’t really black and white situations. Perhaps that is why we turn to comics, where good fights evil, justice battles crime, and on the whole it really is a black and white world. That, at least, is how we imagine Bruce Wayne sees it, and that informs the entire DC Collectibles line of Batman: Black and White statues. That, and the fact that Batman’s costume basically is blacks, whites, and grays; you’d have a harder time featuring a red-and-blue dude like Superman into this monochromatic style.

Directly ahead of Toy Fair, we’re happy to reveal the latest addition to this long-running, artist-focused line. Gerard Way, frontman of My Chemical Romance and curator of DC’s Young Animal is bringing to life in statue form a storyline he once sketched out but that hasn’t seen the light of day until now.

Joker is pretty self-explanatory: he looks like he escaped from Arkham, stole somebody’s jacket, and is casually offing anybody in his way while he’s on a devoted mission of some sort. His arch-enemy, however, has more unusual details.

So what’s up with Batman? Did he join the order of St. Dumas? Is he a religious fanatic who cannot abide laughter? He certainly looks like a holy warrior, while not seeming to be in any sort of mood to love thine enemy. Actually, in the proposed storyline, “Kingdom of the Mad,” Batman would also have been an inmate in Arkham, as Bruce Wayne went insane following the death of his parents and stayed that way. “Gerards indie art style is a perfect fit for this series and offers a fresh take on Batman and The Joker that we’ve never seen before,” says DC Collectibles Executive Creative Director Jim Fletcher, and he’s not kidding. “Seeing these wonderful sculpts, I can’t help but find myself inspired to write the story again, so here is to hoping it happens one day soon,” adds Way. You don’t have to wait till your father leaves you to join this black and white parade.

Both statues will be available in October for $80 each.

So what do you think the deal is with this Batman? Speculate on some storylines in comments!
