The time to batten down the hatches for winter’s imminent arrival is now, folks. Which is exactly why George R.R. Martin — creator of the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series on which the HBO series is based — will not write an episode for season six of Game of Thrones.
Following a similar path he took last season in order to finish up the sixth book of the (as of now) planned eight-book series, The Winds of Winter, Martin has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that he will also not pen an episode during the series’ semi-corresponding sixth season.
This will very likely leave fans divided. Although Martin wrote an episode a piece during the first four seasons, this year marked the first time such an occurrence did not happen. And — if you’ve been paying attention — this season has seen no shortage of controversy and deviation from the story as it plays out in the books. Though it is surely a happy development for book readers who are more intent on getting their hands on the full-on story: after all, book five came out back in July 2011. With the amount of appearances he’s eschewed in the name of writing, though, it feels safe to say that THE WINDS OF WINTER ARE NEARLY HERE. Because winter! It’s coming! Don’t you know anything by now, Jon Snow? I mean JEEZ!
